After Surgery

At the Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California, your treatment doesn’t end after the surgery is completed- far from it. We offer a comprehensive, holistic and fully integrated program of follow-up, including ongoing education (both in person and online), fitness, nutrition, support and community activities - all designed to keep you on a long-term path to wellness.

Recovery

The recovery time and process vary with every individual, depending on the surgical procedure and a variety of other factors. Generally speaking, by following an exercise regimen and dietary guidelines closely - and taking the prescribed medication - you’ll be back to normal activities before you know it.

Resuming a normal diet will take some time and patience, as you adjust to a new way of eating. But you’ll learn to “listen” to your body and proceed with what feels comfortable to you. Remember, we’re always here to help.

Nutrition

The importance of eating the right foods in the proper way is essential not only to your recovery but to your long-term success. Our team will work with you to develop a nutritional program that makes sense for you - and guidelines on how to follow it.

Here are some general “rules of thumb” on what to eat and not eat (and how) after your bariatric surgery:

There are several benefits of regular exercise:

Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California Walking Program

The easiest exercise for most people is walking. Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California will help you begin a walking program—and give you lots of incentives and support to stay on it. For example, we give all our patients a pedometer, a small device that counts the number of steps taken in a day. We want you to start your journey right and it’s a great motivator—it helps you stay on track by monitoring your own progress to reach achievable goals.

Another important aspect of our fitness program is the monthly “Walk with a Doctor” meet-ups that provide a healthy way for patients and doctors to interact and work out together. Our foundation is also a participating charity of the annual La Marathon Big 5K, a walk/run that combines exercise and outreach to promote wellness and our long-term commitment to fighting obesity in the community.

Here are some general tips on how to start a walking regimen:

Walk slowly for 2 ½ minutes, and then pick up the pace for 5 minutes, followed by another 2 ½ minutes at a slow pace for a total of 10 minutes. Do this 3 times a day, every day, for the first week you are home after your surgery. Increase the duration of your walking time every week. Make it fun by walking to your favorite music (nothing too slow, though), walking outside on a scenic path, in a park or on a beach. If the weather is cold or rainy, walk in the mall with friends.

Integrate fitness into your everyday life.

Your body’s health is dependent on the health of your mind. The World Health Organization defines health as not only the “absence of disease but as a state of physical, mental and social well being.”

Our physicians, dietitians, nutritionists and counselors work together and with you to come up with the best program—one that will ensure your success. We believe our support groups and wellness classes can inspire you as a patient to help others as they help themselves. From pre-op through post-op, you’ll always get the help and guidance you need to build a happier, healthier life.

Lifestyle

Long-term wellness is all about engaging in a more well rounded, fuller life—and at Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California we think that involves a lot more than just fitness, therapy, support groups and nutrition classes. There are a lot of ways your life will be impacted by rapid weight loss, and above all we want you to enjoy life and have fun. That’s why we bring in experts to lead seminars in life coaching, socializing forums, clothes shopping, beauty makeovers and many other lifestyle topics.

Support Groups

At Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California, you’ll have lots of opportunities to talk with patients who have successfully undergone bariatric surgery and share their life experiences. Not only is this a great source of moral support, it’s also the best way to educate yourself about the various options that are available to you. We’ll put you in touch with people who may end up being your friends for life, and help you develop support networks that will be an ongoing source of information and encouragement.

Therapy

Therapy can take many forms, and in keeping with our commitment to be your partner for life, Weight Loss Surgery of Southern California sponsors a variety of programs to help you stay on your wellness regimen after your surgery.
